A Rainy Day

The storm higher than the Statue of Liberty.
People not knowing what is going on, but going outside to look. Not a good idea, the water is coming already higher than the Statue of Liberty.
Then the wind started into a big hurricane.
People hurry into the house sacred like a mouse getting chased by a big house cat.
The only person brave enough to go outside in the horrible weather, is Sarah.  She wanted to see what was going.
She put her bathing suit on and went into the horrible weather.  Almost to her death.
In the water it was really really cold. So cold she almost drowned.
But she did not.want to go at 10 years old, and she wanted to find her real parents.  She is adopted and has been moved around homes and homes.
"Sarah come back" screamed Sarah's best friend Bob.  He was adopted too but he has a big crush on her and didn't want her to get hurt.
"Come back"
But it was too late she was in the cold water going to see what was going on.
Sarah saw only water and the bottom of the Statue of Liberty and, one big shark.
She quickly swam as fast as she could, finally got back to the house and got a big big warm towel and got a warm outfit on and couldn't believe what was happening.
She knew a big storm was coming and possibly a new century!
"People people please stop talking I have important news about the weather outside it could possibly be the next century" as everyone looked around scared as mice are when their getting chased by a big house cat.
All the people started crying and calling family, telling them the news.  People looking for their kids, hugging them and crying.
Sarah wanted to have somebody to hug and cry in their arms but she had to be strong and tough it out.  "Sarah"cried Bob she ran to him almost in tears and told him the bad news.
As she told him the news he ran to his foster parents and cried in their arms.  "People we need to get out of here and go to a safer place."
“I'm not going any where" sad an old lady.  "I'm staying here"
Sarah told her how a new century could kill everyone if they don't get to a safer place if not they all die! Sarah started walking up to a higher floor of the library.  But the police wont let her go alone. Only if somebody goes with her.  So she went and got Bob, but still the police officer would not let her go unless she was with an adult.
Bob thought "if i get my foster mom to come with us Sarah will love me"
Bob ran and told his mom about the new century again and told her if they want to survive they have to go up higher in the library and Sarah is trying to go up but she needs an adult with her.
Bobs mom thought he was lying but when she saw Sarah talking to the police officer and than said "ok"
As Bob’s mom walked over the police officer and told the police officer she would take her up there.
"Thank you so much Bobs mom"
You are a weird Little girl she thought to her self.
As they walked up there, the storm was bigger than EVER and the water pressure was so hard it cracked the window and cold cold water filled the library and everyone sadly didn't make it except two little kids one boy one girl.

                              Avalon, Appley Forever

Once upon a time there was a stunningly pretty girl named Avalon.  Her father named her Avalon after his farm in Pennsylvania.  It was an apple farm, named ‘Island of Apples’.  Of course, the name Avalon meant ‘island of apples’.  Avalon’s hair was red and flowed mightily like the Mississippi River.  She used apple shampoo to condition it every night.  She used applesauce body wrap to massage her body once every two weeks.  Even her body wash smelled of syrup and her favorite food was apple pie.

But one day, an evil boy who must not be named turned every apple into a grape.  And since Avalon was so apple-y, he mistook Avalon as an apple and turned her into a grape.  Oh no! The despairing note of being turned into a grape pressed on her soul like an icy hand.  Avalon was hauled into the fruit market, obvious that she did not look like a pretty little girl any more.

Avalon dreaded being sold and swallowed.  She cried day and night.  Her father dreaded Avalon of being lost.  He searched day and night for his beloved daughter.  One day, a customer who was a fairy godmother in disguise heard her cry.  The godmother bought Avalon, with Avalon thinking, “Oh no, now I’m dead… I’m going to be eaten, eaten, eaten, gone…” But the fairy godmother, when she took Avalon out of the shop, just held her and said, “You’re a little girl who was cursed into grape-ness by the evil boy, right?” Avalon nodded furiously.

The fairy godmother took pity of the grape girl.  She used her magic wand and said, “Grapey bad, Grapey not, turn this grape into a girl.  Grapey bad, Grapey not, send your curse away.” Something poofed.  Avalon was a girl again! A girl, the same appley happy girl she’s always been.  “Thank you, oh thank you!” Avalon cried.  The fairy godmother did the spell to all the apples again, “Grapey bad, Grapey not, turn all grapes into apples.  Grapey bad, Grapey not, send your curse away.” All the apples that have been cursed all turned to the fairy godmother and cried “Thank you, oh thank you!”
Avalon was ever so happy to be herself again.  But the fruit store was far from home, and she had no means of transportation back home.  The fairy godmother worked her magic again.  “Far bad, Far not, make road near for Avalon to go back home!” The road immediately shrunk.  The distance shrunk.  Avalon skipped home happily after thanking the fairy godmother.  Her dad was ever so happy to see Avalon back.  The hugged and kissed and lived happily ever after.

FERMIN AND THE PAMPLONA BULLS

There was once a man called Fermín who loved running with the bulls  in the Spanish town of Pamplona.  Fermín was from a small village in Spain, and every year in early july he would pack his bags and set off for Pamplona to join lots of other people at the festival. It was a very popular event called the “Sanfermines” – a bit like his name. But the first year he went, he didn’t realise just how big the bulls were and just how fast they ran.

Fermin dressed all in white with a red neckerchief around his neck and prepared himself to run with the bulls.   There were hundreds of people there, singing a traditional song to saint  fermin to protect them in the chase… and after a few minutes, they released the bulls from the pens.
Fermin was very afrid when he saw the bulls running towards him, for he had never seen such big bulls before. He froze in sheer fright from the chaos of all the people running and all the bulls hurtling along behind them.
Short stories - Fermin and the pamplona bulls
Unfortunately, Fermín had frozen in the middle of the most dangerous street in the chase, Estafeta Street. Just when the bulls were about to reach him,a man came racing up to him, grabbed his arm and pulled him over the barrier.
“Thank you so much, my friend, you’ve saved me from the bulls! I don’t know what happened, I just couldn’t move. It’s my first time here and I was very frightened,” Fermín told the man.
“No problem,” said the man, “but you should know that it’s very dangerous to run with the bulls. At the very least, you should be sensible and not put your life in danger, nor that of any other runner.”
And so the first Sanfermines our hero went to helped him to learn to be careful and think carefully about risks. From then on he only watched the running of the bulls from behind the barrier, cheering on other people who were in fact much better prepared.

One day a man was going to market with his son and his ass. they met a couple on the way.

would like that," said the boy, "help me up father."

The lark in her nestAnd the father did that willingly.
Soon they met another couple. "How shameful of you!" cried the woman, "let your father ride, won't he be tired?"
So, the boy got down and the father rode the ass. Again they marched on.
"poor boy", said the next person they met, "why should the lazy father ride while his son is walking?"
So, the boy got onto the ass too. As they went on, they met some travellers.
"How cruel of them!" They are up to kill the poor ass." cried one of the travellers.
The lark in her nest

Hearing this, the father and the son got down. Now they decided to carry the ass on their shoulders. As they did so, the travellers broke into laughter.
The laughter frightened the ass. It broke free and galloped away.

                         The Jungle Book

In the thick of a jungle in india, little boy is playing with wolf cubs.Mother wolf is there. She says to the little boy, "Mowgli, be careful, you could hurt yourself."

Mowgli, as an infant had been found by the wolf in the jungle, she had brought him up just as she had brought up her own cubs.Mowgli, still a boy played with all the animals in the jungle. He had many friends; Bhaloo, the bear,Bhagera, the panther and his many monkey friends. But Sher Khan, the tiger was no fiend. Mowgli had always been warned to stay away from Sher Khan's territory. Sher Khan did not like Mowgli and waited for a chance to harm the boy.

One day while Mowgli was playing, Bhaloo came running to Mowgli and said, "Mowgli, Sher Khan is in a terrible temper. He is going around telling everyone that he wants to kill you." Mowgli said, "Don't worry Bhaloo, I can protect myself.

Mowgli had a plan. It was to counter attack. He wanted to let loose the wild bulls of the forest on Sher Khan. To do this he had to corner Sher Khan. He knew where Sher Khan spent most of his time,it was on a slope in the mountains, far from Mowgli's cave. He did not want Sher Khan to spot him because that would be the end of him. Mowgli thought, "I should go around the mountain and to the top without sher khan seeing me.From the top the bulls can charge at Sher Khan.hat evening, Mowgli gathered eight wild bulls with the longest and sharpest horns. He said, "Today, we will put an end to the reign of terror by Sher Khan. This is my plan." Mowgli explained to the bulls how he wanted to attack Sher Khan.

As per plan, they circled the mountain, unnoticed by the slumbering tiger. Once they reached the top, they could see in a clearing a little below rested Sher Khan. Mowgli said, "Once I give you the signal, charge together. Any false move and we could be endangering out lives." Mowgli lifted up his hands, brought it down and shouted, "CHARGE."

The bulls ran down the slope, kicking up huge amounts of dust. Sher Khan looked up hearing this thunderous noise. He saw the bulls hurtling towards him; he tried to turn and run but before he knew it the bulls were on top of himThe bulls pierced Sher Khan with their horns and flung him with the momentum of their run. Sher Khan was hurled and flung to his death.

Mowgli and the bulls proudly went to announce to the jungle folks of Sher Khan's end.

Aladdin and The Magic Lamp

Long time ago in China, there lived a poor boy, whose name was Aladdin. Aladdin lived was his mother. One day a  rich and distinguished looking man came to their house and said to Aladdin's mother, "I am a merchant from Arabia and want your son to come with me. I will reward him handsomely." Aladdin's mother instantly agreed. Little did she know that the man pretending to be a rich merchant was in reality a magician.

Next day, Aladdin having packed his belongings left with the 'merchant'. After many hours of traveling the 'merchant' stopped. Aladdin too stopped, surprised that they should stop in such a desolate spot. He looked around; there was nothing in sight for miles.

The 'merchant' pulled out some colored powder from his pocket and threw in the ground. The next instant the whole place was filled with  smoke. As the smoke cleared, Aladdin saw a huge opening in the ground; it was a cave. The 'merchant' turned to Aladdin and said, "I want you to go inside this cave; there will be more gold than you have ever seen; take as much as you want. You will also see an old lamp ; please bring that back to me. Here, take this ring; it will help you." Aladdin was very suspicious but the decided to do as was told.

He lowered himself into the cave , thinking all the while that it would be difficult to climb out without help. Aladdin entered the cave and just like the 'merchant' had said saw gold, jewelry, diamonds and other valuables. He filled his pockets. When this was done, he looked for the lamp; it was lying in the corner, full of dust and dirty. He picked it up and ran to the cave's opening and shouted to the 'merchant', "I have your lamp. Can you please pull me out?" "Give me the lamp," said the 'merchant'. Aladdin was not sure that he would be pulled out if he gave back the lamp; so he said, "First, please pull me out."
Aladdin and The GenieThis angered the 'merchant'. With a loud cry, he pulled out the same colorful powder and threw it on the cave opening, sealing it with a huge boulder. Aladdin was depressed . He thought, "That was no rich merchant; he was surely a magician. I wonder why this lamp was so important to him." As he was thinking he rubbed the lamp. All of sudden a strange mist filled the room and from the mist emerged a stranger looking man. He said, "My master, I am the genie of the lamp, you have rescued me; what would your wish be?" Aladdin was scared but he said in quivering voice, "Ta.. Take me back home."

And the next moment Aladdin was home hugging his mother. He told her of the magician and the lamp. Aladdin again summoned the genie. This time when the genie appeared he was not scared. He said, "Genie, I want a palace, not an old hut." Again to Aladdin and his mother's amazement in front of them was a magnificent palace.

Time passed. Aladdin married the Sultan's daughter and was very happy. It so happened that the evil magician got to know of Aladdin's good fortune. He came by Aladdin's palace pretending to exchange old lamps for new. The princes, Aladdin's wife, not knowing the value of the lamp to Aladdin called out to the magician to wait.

As soon as the magician saw the lamp he grabbed it from the princess' hand and rubbed it. The genie appeared, "you are my master and your wish is my command," he said to the magician. "Take Aladdin's palace to the great desert faraway from here," ordered the magician.

When Aladdin came home, there was no palace and no princess. He guessed it must be the evil magician who had come to take revenge on him. All was not lost, Aladdin had a ring that the magician had given to him. Aladdin pulled out that ring, rubbed it. Another genie appeared. Aladdin said, "Take me to my princess."

Soon, Aladdin was in Arabia with his princess. He found his lamp lying on a table next to the magician. Before the magician could react, Aladdin jumped for the lamp and got hold of it. As soon as he had the lamp, Aladdin rubbed it.

The genie appeared again and said, "My master, Aladdin, it is indeed good to serve you again. What is it that you wish?" "I want you to send this magician to another world so that he never harms anybody," said Aladdin. Aladdin's wish was carried out; the evil magician disappeared forever.

The genie carried Aladdin, the princes and the palace back to China. He stayed with Aladdin for the rest of his life.

Pappy the Paper Bag

Plastic bags are used all over the world to carry everyday items such as bread, shopping, clothes, toys and lots of other things. But pappy, the hero of our story, wasn’t a plastic bag like all the rest – he was a very special paper bag. And pappy had a mission to complete...
Pappy knew that all over the world there were millions of plastic bags that had been abandoned by pepole and ended up floating in the seas and oceans, contaminating the water and causing damage to the creatures that lived nearby.
Pappy didn’t want things to go on this way, so he came up with a plan to put an end to plastic bags being thrown away. One day he went to visit a big supermarket to talk to the manager.
Hello Mr. Manager, my name is Pappy and as you can see I’m a paper bag.I wanted to propose an idea to avoid using plastic bags in shopping,” Pappy declared.
“What? Have you gone mad? Where else would people carry their shopping?” answered the manager, shocked.
“Very simple,” smiled Pappy. “My plan is to replace plastic bags with paper ones like me, because we don't pollute the enviroment.I’d also like to suggest something else: that we reuse both plastic AND paper bags instead of throwing them away straightaway,” Pappy went on, sounding very enthusiastic.
That’s not a bad idea, but why is it better to use paper bags and reuse them?asked the manager, interested by what he what he was hearing.
“Well, because firstly it would mean fewer plastic bags spoiling the environment.

Hello Mr. Manager, my name is Pappy and as you can see I’m a paper bag.I wanted to propose an idea to avoid using plastic bags in shopping,” Pappy declared. But it would also save us mony, because we would be reusing all our bags without needing to buy new ones,” Pappy explained.
The manager of the big supermarket realised that they were wasting resoures, and that this could be avoided.so following week only paper bags and plastic bags were given out to the shoppers.
pappy went all over the world supermarket by supermarket, spreading his message that we should always re-use our bags, encouraging recyling and looking after the planet.

THE ABODE OF GOD :-)

One day, an old lion felt hungry. Being unable to hunt, he thought of a plan and started limping. A monkey sitting on a tree saw him and asked, "Why are you limping?"

At this the lion replied, "I have committed many sins in my life. Now I am old and want to repent for them. I am walking carefully so that I might not kill any ant on the way."

The monkey came down from the tree to meet the noble lion. The lion at once caught hold of him. But the monkey was very clever. He suddenly started laughing.

When the lion asked the reason for laughing, the monkey said, "One who will laugh at this moment will go to the abode of god." The lion himself at once started laughing.

The monkey got an opportunity and immediately climbed the tree. The lion repented for his foolishness.

The Golden Crab

Once upon a time there was a fisherman who had a wife and three children. Every morning he used to go out
Princess and the Golden Crabfishing, and whatever fish he caught he sold to the King. One day, among the other fishes, he caught a golden crab. When he came home he put all the fishes together into a great dish, but he kept the Crab separate because it shone so beautifully, and placed it upon a high shelf in the cupboard. Now while the old woman, his wife, was cleaning the fish, and had tucked up her gown so that her feet were visible, she suddenly heard a voice, which said:
'Let down, let down thy petticoat That lets thy feet be seen.

She turned round in surprise, and then she saw the little creature, the Golden Crab.

'What! You can speak, can you, you ridiculous crab?' she said, for she was not quite pleased at the Crab's remarks. Then she took him up and placed him on a dish.

When her husband came home and they sat down to dinner, they presently heard the Crab's little voice saying, 'Give me some too. They were all very much surprised, but they gave him something to eat. When the old man came to take away the plate which had contained the Crab's dinner, he found it full of gold, and as the same thing happened every day he soon became very fond of the Crab.

One day the Crab said to the fisherman's wife, Go to the King and tell him I wish to marry his younger daughter.

The old woman went accordingly, and laid the matter before the King, who laughed a little at the notion of his daughter marrying a crab, but did not decline the proposal altogether, because he was a prudent monarch, and knew that the Crab was likely to be a prince in disguise. He said, therefore, to the fisherman's wife, 'Go, old woman, and tell the Crab I will give him my daughter if by tomorrow  he can build a wall in front of my castle much higher than my tower, upon which all the flowers of the world must grow and bloom,

The fisherman's wife went home and gave this message.

Then the Crab gave her a golden rod, and said, 'Go and strike with this rod three times upon the ground on the place which the King showed you, and tomorrow morning the wall will be there.

The old woman did so and went away again.

The next morning, when the King awoke, what do you think he saw? The wall stood there before his eyes, exactly as he had bespoken it!

Then the old woman went back to the King and said to him, 'Your Majesty's orders have been fulfilled.

That is all very well, said the King but I cannot give away my daughter until there stands in front of my palace a garden in which there are three fountains, of which the first must play gold, the second diamonds, and the third brilliants.

So the old woman had to strike again three times upon the ground with the rod, and the next morning the garden was there. The King now gave his consent, and the wedding was fixed for the very next day.

Then the Crab said to the old fisherman, 'Now take this rod; go and knock with it on a certain mountain; then a black man[6] will come out and ask you what you wish for. Answer him thus: ''Your master, the King, has sent me to tell you that you must send him his golden garment that is like the sun.'' Make him give you, besides, the queenly robes of gold and precious stones which are like the flowery meadows, and bring them both to me. And bring me also the golden cushion.

The old man went and did his errand. When he had brought the precious robes, the Crab put on the golden garment and then crept upon the golden cushion, and in this way the fisherman carried him to the castle, where the Crab presented the other garment to his bride. Now the ceremony took place, and when the married pair were alone together the Crab made himself known to his young wife, and told her how he was the son of the greatest king in the world, and how he was enchanted, so that he became a crab by day and was a man only at night; and he could also change himself into an eagle as often as he wished. No sooner had he said this than he shook himself, and immediately became a handsome youth, but the next morning he was forced to creep back again into his crab-shell. And the same thing happened every day. But the Princess's affection for the Crab, and the polite attention with which she behaved to him, surprised the royal family very much. They suspected some secret, but though they spied and spied, they could not discover it. Thus a year passed away, and the Princess had a son, whom she called Benjamin. But her mother still thought the whole matter very strange. At last she said to the King that he ought to ask his daughter whether she would not like to have another husband instead of the Crab? But when the daughter was questioned she only answered:

'I am married to the Crab, and him only will I have.

Then the King said to her, 'I will appoint a tournament in your honour, and I will invite all the princes in the world to it, and if any one of them pleases you, you shall marry him.

In the evening the Princess told this to the Crab, who said to her,Take this rod go to the garden gate & knock with it, then a black man will come out and say to you Why have you called me, and what do you require of me?'' Answer him thus: 'Your master the King has sent me hither to tell you to send him his golden armour and his steed and the silver apple.'' And bring them to me.'

The Princess did so, and brought him what he desired.

The following evening the Prince dressed himself for the tournament. Before he went he said to his wife, 'Now mind you do not say when you see me that I am the Crab. For if you do this evil will come of it. Place yourself at the window with your sisters; I will ride by and throw you the silver apple Take it in your hand but if they ask you who I am, say that you do not know.' So saying, he kissed her, repeated his warning once more, and went away.

The Princess went with her sisters to the window and looked on at the tournament. Presently her husband rode by and threw the apple up to her. She caught it in her hand and went with it to her room, and by-and-by her husband came back to her. But her father was much surprised that she did not seem to care about any of the Princes; he therefore appointed a second tournament.

The Crab then gave his wife the same directions as before, only this time the apple which she received from the black man was of gold. But before the Prince went to the tournament he said to his wife, 'Now I know you will betray me to-day.'

But she swore to him that she would not tell who he was. He then repeated his warning and went away.

In the evening, while the Princess, with her mother and sisters, was standing at the window, the Prince suddenly galloped past on his steed and threw her the golden apple.

Then her mother flew into a passion, gave her a box on the ear, and cried out Does not even that prince please you, you fool?

The Princess in her fright exclaimed,That is the Crab himself!

Her mother was still more angry because she had not been told sooner, ran into her daughter's room where the crab-shell was still lying, took it up and threw it into the fire. Then the poor Princess cried bitterly, but it was of no use; her husband did not come back.

Now we must leave the Princess and turn to the other persons in the story. One day an old man went to a stream to dip in a crust of bread which he was going to eat, when a dog came out of the water, snatched the bread from his hand, and ran away. The old man ran after him, but the dog reached a door, pushed it open, and ran in, the old man following him. He did not overtake the dog, but found himself above a staircase, which he descended. Then he saw before him a stately palace, and, entering, he found in a large hall a table set for twelve persons. He hid himself in the hall behind a great picture hat he might see what would happen. At noon he heard a great noise, so that he trembled with fear. When he took courage to look out from behind the picture, he saw twelve eagles flying in. At this sight his fear became still greater. The eagles flew to the basin of a fountain that was there and bathed themselves, when suddenly they were changed into twelve handsome youths. Now they seated themselves at the table, and one of them took up a goblet filled with wine, and said, 'A health to my father!' And another said, 'A health to my mother!' and so the healths went round. Then one of them said:
'A health to my dearest lady,
Long may she live and well!
But a curse on the cruel mother
That burnt my golden shell!'

And so saying he wept bitterly. Then the youths rose from the table, went back to the great stone fountain, turned themselves into eagles again, and flew away.

Then the old man went away too, returned to the light of day, and went home. Soon after he heard that the Princess was ill, and that the only thing that did her good was having stories told to her. He therefore went to the royal castle, obtained an audience of the Princess, and told her about the strange things he bad seen in the underground palace. No sooner had he finished than the Princess asked him whether he could find the way to that palace.

'Yes,' he answered, 'certainly.'

And now she desired him to guide her thither at once. The old man did so, and when they came to the palace he hid her behind the great picture and advised her to keep quite still, and he placed himself behind the picture also. Presently the eagles came flying in, and changed themselves into young men, and in a moment the Princess recognised her husband amongst them all, and tried to come out of her hiding-place; but the old man held her back. The youths seated themselves at the table; and now the Prince said again, while he took up the cup of wine:

'A health to my dearest lady,
Long may she live and well!
But a curse on the cruel mother
That burnt my golden shell!'

Then the Princess could restrain herself no longer, but ran forward and threw her arms round her husband. And immediately he knew her again, and said:

'Do you remember how I told you that day that you would betray me? Now you see that I spoke the truth. But all that bad time is past. Now listen to me: I must still remain enchanted for three months. Will you stay here with me till that time is over?'

So the Princess stayed with him, and said to the old man, 'Go back to the castle and tell my parents that I am staying here.'

Her parents were very much vexed when the old man came back and told them this, but as soon as the three months of the Prince's enchantment were over, he ceased to be an eagle and became once more a man, and they returned home together. And then they lived happily, and we who hear the story are happier still.

                                                           The Golden Goose

The Golden Goose    Once upon a time, there lived a wood cutter and his wife who had three sons. The eldest two were strong and tall, and their mother and father were always telling them how handsome and clever they were. But the youngest son was, to tell you the truth, just a bit simple in the head. He wasn’t very tall, and he wasn’t very strong, and his family thought he was good for nothing. They hardly ever called him by his real name, but instead they gave him a cruel nickname. They called him Dummy, because they said he was stupid.
One day the eldest son wanted to go to the forest to cut wood. The mother praised him for being such a useful boy and before he set out, she gave him some of her best fruit cake for his lunch, and a bottle of wine to wash it down. While the boy was walking through the forest, he met a little grey old man who said to him:
“Do give me a little piece of your cake and a swig of your wine. I’m so terribly hungry and thirsty.
And the eldest son replied;
“Be off with you, you filthy old beggar. “
And the little grey old man went away, but not without taking his revenge. He put a curse on the boy, so that when he started to cut a tree down, his axe slipped and went into his leg. The boy limped home to his mother who washed his wound and bandaged him.
The next day, the second eldest son went out to the forest to cut wood. Before he set out, his mother praised him for being such a useful boy, but especially asked him to be careful with the axe, so as not to have a nasty accident like his brother. The boy promised not to be careless, and his mother gave him some of her best sponge cake for his lunch, and a bottle of wine to wash it down.
It happened that as the boy was walking through the woods, he came across the same little gray old man. The man said to him, “Do please share your sponge cake and your wine with me, for I am so terribly weak with hunger and thirst.” And the boy said;
“Be off with you, you lazy old scoundrel. If you want to eat, you’d better work.”
And the little grey old man went away, but not without taking his revenge. Not long after, when the boy was cutting down a tree, his axe flew out of his hand and hit him on the head. He crawled home to his mother who bandaged up his wound and asked him why he had not kept his promise to be more careful.
For the rest of the week, the two eldest sons were both lying in bed recovering from their wounds. The father said to the third and youngest son:
“Get on your feet, you lazy Dummy, why are you sitting around doing nothing, when both brothers are hurt and unable to work? Get out to the forest and cut some wood – if you’re not too stupid to do that.”
The mother laughed at him and said, “It’s more than likely that Dummy will cut his own head off – but it won’t be much of loss to anyone.” And before he left she gave him some cake that she had burnt almost to a crust in the oven, and a bottle of sour beer to wash it down.
As the youngest boy was going through the woods, he met the same little gray old man who had crossed the path of his brothers. The man said to him:
“Do please share some of your cake and beer with me. I am so terribly hungry and thirsty, and I fear that if I don’t have something to eat and drink soon, I will surely die”
The young boy replied:
“Old man, I will gladly share with you what I have. But the cake is burned and the beer is sour.”
Never mind that,” said the man. “I am grateful for what you can give me.”
And the boy and the little gray old man sat down and shared the cake and the beer. After they had finished their lunch, the man said:
“Since you have a good heart, and have shared what you have with me, I will give you a reward. You see that old tree over there. Cut it down with your axe and you will find something of value inside its hollow trunk.”
And so when the little gray old man had left, the young boy, whose parents called him “Dummy”, took his axe and cut down the hollow tree just as he had been told. Inside he found a goose – but this was no ordinary bird – for its feathers were made of gold.
The boy realised that he was in luck, and thought to himself “Why should I go home now and suffer the insults of my parents and brothers? They will take this valuable bird from me, and I shall have nothing.”

And so the boy decided to run away from home. He put the golden goose under his arm and set out for the town. Then he went to the inn, intending to stay there. He stood at the bar and asked the innkeeper if he would accept a golden feather as payment for his board and lodgings. When the innkeeper, saw the golden goose, he readily agreed. But after the boy had gone to bed he said to his three daughters:
“That young boy whose parents call him Dummy is staying up in our guest room. But he can’t be as simple in the head as they say – for he’s got a valuable bird with him – a goose with feathers made of gold.”
The eldest daughter thought to herself, “ Well fancy that. Feathers made of gold. I’ll pluck one or maybe more of those for myself.”

After the clock struck midnight, she sneaked into the boy’s room, and saw that he was asleep with his arm around the golden goose. She crept up and tried to pluck a feather. But the feather wouldn’t budge, and when she tried to take her hand away, she found that she was stuck to it. She couldn’t move, and she couldn’t cry out for fear of waking the boy. She had to stay where she was, on her knees by the bed, with her hand on the feather.
After the clock struck one in the morning, the second sister came in the room, planning to take one feather or more for herself. In the dark she didn’t see her sister, but as soon as she touched her back, she found that her hand was stuck fast to her, and she had to stay where she was, not moving and not making a sound.
After the clock struck two in the morning, the third sister came in. The other two shouted: “Stay back !” but it was too late, – she reached out hoping to steal a feather and found that her hand was stuck to the middle sister.
The boy and the goose slept soundly through all of this. In the morning the boy got up, paid his bill with a golden feather, and left with inn with the goose under his arm. The sisters had no choice but to follow on behind him. A pretty procession they made.
Along the way they met the Bishop:
What a sight!” he exclaimed. “It’s hardly right for three young women to follow a boy around like that !”
And as the girls went past he tapped the youngest on the shoulder. In doing so he found that he was stuck to her and had to follow.
Further up the road they met a Police Sergeant. The Bishop called out to him “Sergeant: Help me get free from this young woman’s shoulder. I’m stuck to her and people are bound to start all kinds of gossip about it!”
The Police Sergeant tried to pull the Bishop free, but in doing so he found that both his hands stuck to his waist, and he had to follow along with the procession.
At the top of the road they met the Mayor.

What’s this town coming to?” cried the Mayor. “The Bishop and the police sergeant following three young girls who are following a young boy, all holding on to each other in a most unseemly fashion. Have they gone mad?”
And as he spoke, he tried to pull the Police Sergeant and the Bishop away – but in doing so he found that he was stuck to both of them, and had to follow on.
The boy led the little line of townspeople along up the road, and at the top of the hill they passed the King’s Palace. Now the King’s daughter was very beautiful, but she had the saddest face in the whole wide world. She had never laughed and not once even smiled. The king was so troubled by the young Princess’s unhappiness, that he had made a special law. Whosoever could make her laugh and smile would win her hand in marriage.

But the truth was that nothing very funny ever happened inside the Royal Palace. All the King’s servants and advisers were far too high and mighty to understand what would make a young girl laugh – or indeed to allow anything amusing to happen at all.
As the boy known as Dummy went past the palace, he still held the golden goose under his arm, and he was followed by the innkeeper’s three daughters, the Bishop, the Police Sergeant, and the Mayor. The Princess looked out at saw the important people in their uniforms being tugged along behind three girls and a boy with a goose, and she thought that it was the first thing she had seen in her life that was truly funny. She burst out laughing and ran, still giggling, to her father to tell him all about what she had seen. When the King looked out of his window and saw the procession, he couldn’t help laughing himself. He sent for his guards and told them to bring the boy and his followers directly to him. When the boy entered the King’s chamber, with the followers behind him, the Mayor, the Bishop and the Policeman all called out angrily that he should pay for his crime with his head. The King, still laughing, said that on the contrary – he would be rewarded with the hand in marriage of his daughter the Princess.

For an entire week after that , the innkeeper’s three daughters, the Bishop, the policeman, and the Mayor were all stuck to the gold goose and to one another. And while they were stuck , all the towns people and the whole court laughed and laughed at them . And the boy whose family called him Dummy married the Princess and inherited the kingdom. He lived with his beautiful wife and they had six happy smiling children, and the palace was often filled with laughter.
